James was a devout family man. Married to Sara Davenport, together they had 3 sons: Isaac Davenport, Nathaniel Davenport, and Jacob Davenport.

On First Day 1724 his family gifted him a Diary of James Davenport1 , in which he kept a close account of his final days on The Mariner's Fortune.
